Day 202: today is library day

Dylan's finally getting his last two molars in! Last time, he was a trooper, but this time, wow, he's being so adult about it!

We first suspected he might be cutting new teeth when we saw him cramming his fingers way back into his mouth (aren't we astute??), so naturally, we asked him: Dylan, do your teeth hurt?

Dylan: (stares straight ahead and crams his fingers back into his mouth)

Tom: Dylan do your gums have an owie?

Dylan: Yeah! (points to his cheeks) Gums! Ouuuuuch! (scampers off to climb the stairs). It's ok. It feel better soon...!"

And, with that, he was off to play! We're seeing the usual loss of appetite but, so far, no fussiness at all!

Dylan's first run!

Christina told us about Luke's Run, an annual running event celebrating Luke Yden who lost his battle against leukemia in 2001 (at the age of 6). It was a wonderful and touching event -- and Dylan's first organized run!

Dylan has been "training" for a few weeks now. Every night, he runs laps (seriously), pumping his arms (his right arm, especially) as per Daddy-o's coaching. He has been doing this voluntarily!!!

Of course, we're tickled that he thinks running is fun...and when we asked him if he wanted to run a race with me (poor Tom is still not running), he was sooo excited!

So, it was very cool to hear about this free event (a good way to gauge Dylan's interest in such things -- I'm planning on registering him for the kiddie races at the Silicon Valley Half Marathon in October).

Christina and I ran the 5K, and after, we stayed for the kids races. 0-5 year olds had to do one WHOLE lap around the grassy area in the park...not a trivial distance at all!

He didn't actually run around the whole thing. =( After a very strong start, he ran on to the grass, and when I redirected him to the pavement, he stumbled and scraped his hand and he didn't feel much like running after that! But, after he had some time to regain his composure, we took him to the final stretch and he ran it in strong! He stopped as soon as his toe went over the finish line to reach his arm out behind him and call me!

He was pleasantly surprised to get a medal put around his neck! He's very proud of it, and he wore his race bib all day long!

more Gizdich Ranch and more Baby Blue Blues Band

This past weekend, we went apple picking at Gizdich Ranch (where we'd previously gone for strawberry picking) and met up with other daycare families afterwards for some apple pie (Tom and I brought some vegan slices from New Leaf) and some of the most delicious apple cider we'd ever tasted!

Dylan was more interested in picking more strawberries -- and sampling away -- but he did eventually help us pick some apples (red and golden delicious).

Believe it or not, after apple-picking, we headed to Gilroy Gardens to see the Baby Blue Blues Band perform. Dylan was already tired, but he really wanted to see them (they are still a favorite band!) and we promised him, so we felt like we had to keep our word! Dylan, of course, was a trooper. He was eager to join in on the audience participation; he helped strum the guitar on one song, held Ray the Rhino's hands and jumped on the trampoline for another, and he even danced along to the other songs!

We got to see some farm animals before we finally headed out...and, luckily, he sacked out on the way home!

Dylan develops fear

Well, not so long ago (maybe 2 or 3 weeks ago), Dylan and Taliana had great fun, running around the house pretending there was a monster chasing them. This was the first time we'd ever heard any mention of "monster" from Dylan. Then, a couple of weeks ago at Costco, we saw a skeleton that made creepy sounds and climbed in and out of his grave. Dylan wanted to see it over and over again and he even noted how brown the monster's teeth were and how he needed to brush and floss. It was great fun and so cute when he made monster sounds...up until last week, that is!

While we were out eating dinner at Sri, Dylan noticed some masks hanging on the wall. We were told the masks were to keep the demons away, but at some point during dinner, Dylan got convinced that the monsters were s-c-a-r-y!

We could not convince him otherwise and we actually had to leave as quickly as we possibly could to get him away from them!!!

Poor guy. We were hoping we could stave off scary monsters for a bit longer, but I guess that's not to be. Halloween this year should be interesting (or maybe this is a passing phase, who knows??)...!

Day 192: watching the Alaskan pig races at the County Fair

watching the Alaskan pig races
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.
Another year, another county fair! This time, Dylan had a blast watching little baby piglets nurse and Alaskan pigs race; he fed some carrots to some goats and a pony; and he took another pony ride. We didn't stay as long as we did last year, mostly because Dylan got so very tired -- I don't know how he mustered up the energy to stay awake all last year!

He was already fading fast by the time the pigs were racing (12:30pm) and, although he enjoyed the pony ride, he was clearly ready to sleep as soon as he got off the pony!

Overall, it's continued to be very busy here. We added Friday PMs to Dylan's school schedule at the beginning of this month (owing to my work schedule just getting too insane what with Dylan's late bed time!). He's adjusted to it just fine and, although, it's been great for my work load, I miss having fun Fridays with him!

I don't know how my little sister manages it, but she always seems so prepared with her camera! These next few videos are from yesterday (Sunday).

thumbs up!

He clearly thinks he's doing it right, and that's the cutest thing about it!
