hot dog!

Dylan seems to be in a mini-language-explosion phase right now. Today, he clearly signed "more," "bear," and "sleepy". In the past few days, he's acquired about 6 new signs! His total vocab so far includes all of the above plus:

  • hat
  • dog (featured above)
  • music
  • hello/goodbye
  • light
  • fan
  • hooray!
  • uh oh
  • noooooo
. "Nooo" is still #1 in the rankings...!

Granny Bug

Dylan went on his first amusement park ride ever!

Yep, Taliana, Heather, Dylan and I headed to Happy Hollow for a short excursion. This wasn't Dylan's first visit, but it was his first time to get on the rides!

He rode both carousels -- the one with horsies and the one with sea critters -- the Danny the Dragon train ride and the Granny Bug ride!

He had a blast, especially since Auntie Cindy, Jason and Tyler also met us there (surprise for him!) and we got to check out the animals on the zoo side of the park.

After we got home, we met up with Tom, and all three of us headed downtown -- they headed for caffeine for Tom while I went in for a brief meeting at work. Then, we headed to dinner where Dylan just, literally, ran circles around me!

He fell asleep early tonight, but hopefully, he'll sleep right on through until morning....

Back Log: On this day last year, Dylan was only 40 days old and his eyes were still blue (read post)!

13 month update

Our little guy is definitely getting bigger! Last night while we were reading some books, he surprised us by signing "pig," "cow" and maybe even "bunny"!! He has also been signing "music", and this morning at Mothersong, one of the moms thought he signed "sleep". I'll try to take video clips of his signs. It's really adorable to see the baby versions of what we're doing!

Anyway, he's definitely more communicative now. Not only is he building his signing vocabulary, he also points things out a lot more and tries to imitate sounds we make (mostly animal sounds, but still...!).

For the past 3 weeks or so, he's also been hard at work trying to learn how to eat with utensils -- he's reasonably good at getting spoons into his mouth, but getting food onto the spoon or his baby fork are still proving to be challenging. And, he's doing a lot of "vacuuming" and self-grooming (he loves to try combing/brushing his hair after bath time).

The other night, he watched Tom use a stud finder (just a powerful magnet encased in plastic), then he took a turn moving it along the wall until the magnet stuck to a nail.

Dylan is also really eager to take off on his own these days and even goes so far as to push our hands away when we try to walk with him!

Time is flying.

another beachin' day

Today was another full Dylan day. We started out with a pancake brekky (thanks dad!) then headed to HAT's for a collective trip to the Farmer's market where we sampled (and got) some delicious Rainier cherries, some broccoli and some roasted corn. Afterwards, Cindy brought all of the boys to Santa Cruz for a visit, so we ate lunch at the Corner Cafe while Tom had another follow-up appointment for his eye. We then headed to Seabright Beach for an afternoon of fun in the sun.

After getting all tuckered out, we headed home for some Thai food and more hanging out time.

Dylan loved visiting with everyone (as usual) and stayed chipper until his postponed bedtime (9:45pm) at which time he promptly fell asleep! Hopefully, he'll be good to go for tomorrow's brunch with Uncle David and Taliana (hopefully, Tom and I will be, too!)....

recuperating at the beach

Cindy, Jason and Tyler headed down to Santa Cruz because it was such a gorgeous day and Dylan was finally well enough to hang out with folks.

It was a great opportunity for Dylan to wear his little sun romper! Sure, he looked like he came straight out of a spaceship, but hey, he was protected with SPF 50+!

He was so tuckered out already -- he's still recuperating from croup and some pretty tough, restless nights -- but he had so much fun playing with his cousins, he was cheery up until bed time!

thumbs up to dad

Tom's torn cornea
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Tom came home all set to play with little D. and WHAM! Dylan flailed his little arm with his little thumb with his not-yet-clipped thumbnail and, with great random aim, he raked his little thumb with his NYCT right across Tom's cornea!

Luckily, Tom's no stranger to torn corneas (thanks to that black belt dude whose long toenails got the better of Tom's eyes way back when...), so he knew straight away that this burning and itching he was feeling in his eyeball was a job for the Urgent Care doctor.

Yeeeesh...

What a week we've been having. So far, I'm the only one who has not had to see a doctor (not for myself, anyway).

"hiiiiii!"

"hiiiiii!"
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Dylan now says "hi"...often and loudly! This evening, he spontaneously picked up the phone and held it to his ear! Luckily, I happened to have my camera out and somehow managed to capture the fleeting moment!

Dylan now also signs doggy, he meows when he sees cats, and tries to say "light" (sounds more like "aiiii")...and he sure does say "no" a whole lot.

Father's Day walk along West Cliff

Father's Day was a day with a lot of eating out and a lot of work being done. After brunch at Dharma's and Tom's 2-hour nap, we took a short walk along West Cliff, had dinner at Thai House, and then headed home to do work. Tom prepped for his classes and that about wrapped up Dad's day festivities up here....

Hope the celebratin' was grand down south!

Tom on a zipline in Mexico. He didn't make it all the way to the platform, so he had to reel himself in....

standing tall

height: 30" (72nd percentile)
weight: 20 pounds (10th percentile)

His weight is trending nicely, but he shot up in height (last time, he was in the 50th percentile)!

Poor fella also got vaccinations today...and a finger prick to test for anemia (negative on the anemia!)!

Still, he had plenty of energy for a good long post-doctor's-appointment play session at the park and he only sacked out for the night around 10pm.

Hoping his reactions to the vaccinations will be mild if any...

Dylan had soo much fun in Puerto Vallarta! It made the whole passport madness totally worth it (in a nutshell, Dylan's passport wasn't processed in time and we burned 2 days on countless phone calls to the passport agency and on an eleventh hour appointment at the Passport Agency in SF! We missed our original flight and thus paid a premium for the days we were in Mexico!).

He had so much fun playing in the ocean and in the sand, swimming in the pool, drinking strawberry daquiries, playing with his cousins, and so much more!

As for the shades, he didn't actually want to wear them (so sad for me)...but he did want to try on grandpa's and lola's. Go figger!

Tom and I had our fun, too. We kayaked and did another canopy tour (much like the one we did in Costa Rica) with Rob and Chris, and I got my swanky, swanky massage on the spa terrace (where I could listen to the ocean)!

We took a million photos, a few of which are posted on flickr....
